Man accused of stealing lottery tickets turns himself in

A 37-year-old Tilbury man is facing a handful of charges after he grabbed two trays of lottery tickets from a local convenience store and took off without paying for them.

Police said they got a tip about that at around 6:45 a.m. on Monday, August 28.

Officers said they were told the man went into Circle K on Queen Street North in Tilbury and demanded money and lottery tickets from the employee, but the employee refused to hand any of that over.

At that point, the man allegedly grabbed two trays of tickets from the counter and took off.

Police said they were able to work with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation to trace several winning tickets back to a different vendor and secured an image of the surveillance footage, which they released to the public.

Officers said they were able to identify the suspect and eventually obtained a warrant for his arrest when they couldn't find him.

A 37-year-old Tilbury man turned himself in to police on Monday in connection with the case and he was charged with theft, possession of stolen property, and wearing a disguise with intent to commit theft.

He was later released with conditions and a future court date.
