Ontario encourages family fishing this weekend

This Family Day weekend, the Ontario government hopes to encourage families to enjoy the outdoors by offering the opportunity to fish anywhere in the province without a license or Outdoors Card.

Just remember, all conservation license catch limits, size limits, and other fishing regulations still apply. Participants will also need provincial or federal identification showing their name and date of birth.

"Fishing is a time-honoured tradition and a terrific way for families and friends to enjoy the outdoors and spend time together," said Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Graydon Smith. "Whether you are a seasoned angler or a first-time fisher, this is a great opportunity to get outside."

Family Day weekend is one of four times each year Ontario residents can fish for free. It's also offered on Mother's Day weekend, Father's Day weekend, and Family Fishing week in July.

Outside the free fishing periods, anyone between 18 and 65 must carry an Outdoors Card and a fishing license.

Veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members living in Ontario can fish whenever and wherever it is allowed.
