The Rotary Club of Chatham Sunrise is getting ready to unveil a new park that was created as a tribute to Ukraine.
Ukraine Park is located at the corner of Victoria and Grand Avenue in Chatham and is a cooperative effort by Rotary Sunrise and Community Living.
Earlier this year, the club launched a sunflower seed fundraiser with the goal of raising $10,000 to help out Ukrainians.
According to Rotary Sunrise member Paul Roy, the fundraiser was such a success that the club was able to surpass its goal and raise a total of $40,000.
"We’ll be presenting a cheque for $40,000 to Rotary International’s ShelterBox program where all the funds will go directly towards Ukrainian humanitarian relief," said Roy.
The park has been dressed with berms, sunflowers, benches, and flagpoles with both Canadian and Ukrainian flags. The grand opening event will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, August 27.
"Someone in the club suggested that we should have a demonstration garden of sunflowers in the community to salute Ukraine," said Roy. "We are very pleased."
Saturday's grand opening will be attended by Mayor Canniff, local Ukrainians living in Chatham, Rotary Club members, and major contributors as well as donors to the successful project.
"We hope to see a lot of people from Chatham-Kent and all of the Ukrainian people at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning," said Roy.
