Man accused of assaulting officer, attempting to steal woman's car

A 37-year-old Wallaceburg man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly stole the keys to a woman's car and punched a police officer.

Police said an officer on general patrol found the man while responding to a report of a suspicious person in a parking lot on Wallace Street in Wallaceburg.

When the officer was speaking with the man, he allegedly lied to the officer about his identity while he was sitting in a vehicle.

Police said the officer was able to determine the man's true identity and also learned that he was in someone else's vehicle at the time. As he was being arrested, the man allegedly resisted the officer, punching him and grabbing the officer's taser in an attempt to disarm him.

Police said the man was eventually taken into custody after a struggle.

Before police arrived, the man also allegedly stole a woman's keys in an attempt to steal her vehicle. Officers said she was able to get her keys back, though, after fighting the man and then drive off.

The man who was arrested in connection with the case was charged with obstructing police, resisting arrest, assaulting police, disarming a police officer, and robbery.

He was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.
