Town of Petrolia waives penalties, interest charges during pandemic

Petrolia residents are getting some relief during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The town has waived penalties and interest charges on property taxes as well as late fees on utilities and other invoices until May 31.

Non-sufficient funds charges also won't be collected until then.

Council also approved full refunds for building permits that had to be cancelled prior to construction due to the provincial emergency.

It's estimated the measures will cost the town between $20,000 and $30,000. The costs will be tracked with other COVID-19-related expenses as the town may be eligible for money back from senior government.

Petrolia Mayor Brad Loosley said it's important to help residents who may be struggling.

"We understand that this is a difficult time for our ratepayers, and we want to help," said Loosley. "It is important that we continue to provide services to residents, but now is not the time for us to penalize residents due to financial hardship. We are all in this together, and we want Petrolia to come out of this economic slowdown in the most positive way possible."

These measures will be reviewed at the town's council meeting on May 25 as more information regarding the pandemic closures becomes available.
