Eight new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in London-area

Two more deaths related to COVID-19 and eight new cases of the virus have been confirmed in the London region.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported on Thursday two additional people who were infected with COVID-19 have now died. That brings the area's death toll from the virus to 14. The deaths include two at local long-term care homes.

The number of cases in London Middlesex has risen to 258, with the addition of eight newly confirmed cases. The total includes 29 residents and 14 staff at area long-term care homes, nine at local retirement facilities, and 120 cases that have been resolved. Twenty-seven people infected with COVID-19 are in the care of the London Health Sciences Centre, with 11 in intensive care.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, Southwestern Public Health reported just one newly confirmed case on Thursday. The total number of cases in that region is now at 41. No new deaths were reported.

Provincial public health officials confirmed another 514 new cases of the virus, the second-highest single-day jump in cases in Ontario. Currently, there have been 8,961 cases confirmed province-wide, which includes 423 deaths, 38 of which were reported on Thursday. A total of 803 people have been hospitalized with the virus, 200 of which are in intensive care on ventilators.

The number of people who have recovered from the virus has also gone up with 4,194 cases considered resolved.

As of Thursday, there were outbreaks of COVID-19 reported in 104 long-term care homes in the province. Nearly 20 of the deaths recorded in the last 24 hours were residents of the homes. Since the outbreak began, a total of 162 long-term care residents sickened by the virus have died.
