UPDATE: Lambton pandemic cases surpass 100, death toll at 10

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Sarnia-Lambton surpassed 100 Good Friday, and the death toll rose to 10.

Lambton Public Health reported the case count increased from 98 Thursday to 105 and then to 107 as of Saturday morning with 13 people having recovered.

Bluewater Health reported the 10th patient death Friday.

Communications Chief Julia Oosterman said a 93-year-old female admitted April 5 from Sarnia's Landmark Village retirement home died. Six of the county's 10 deaths are now linked to the facility.

As of Saturday morning, there were 27 patients in hospital with confirmed COVID-19 and 13 in hospital suspected of having the virus with tests pending.

Local officials are appealing to residents to celebrate Easter differently this year to help stop the spread of the virus.

Sarnia Police Chief Norm Hansen is reminding people this long weekend to keep social distancing in mind, and avoid large groups.

"I can tell you from my own experience Easter is a holiday that we always get together with extended family probably up to 15 or 20 people," said Hansen. "We're not doing that this year, we're staying home and that's just the way it is. I hope people obey this and listen, and you never hear me say this but I'm also hoping for bad weather."

Provincial police in Ontario are also begging people to stay home. The OPP said many Ontarians are contemplating a trip to the cottage or a gathering with family and friends, but it's not wise to do so.

The OPP Highway Safety Division is reminding people to practice physical distancing and stay home.

Lambton's Medical Officer of Health Doctor Sudit Ranade said this is not the time to gather with extended family, and urged everyone to follow physical distancing rules.

Canada's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has said that people should have holiday dinners and celebrations with household members only, and connect with others via phone or video-chat.
