Organizers behind an initiative that ensures no child within Chatham-Kent goes without a Christmas, are now working to make sure children are able to celebrate Easter during this unprecedented time.
Tim Mifflin, director of the Chatham Goodfellows, said the board unanimously voted over the weekend to do what they could to provide some Easter treats to families in need during the COVID-19 crisis.
"We're in profound times. We have never gone through something like this," said Mifflin. "It was the least that we could do to bring some goodwill and bring back some normalcy for the young kids."
Mifflin said Mark Lush, the manager of Giant Tiger on Grand Avenue West in Chatham -- who partners with the Goodfellows at Christmas -- made a $300 donation towards the cause. On Monday afternoon, the Goodfellows picked up "well over $2,000" worth of chocolate bunnies and Peeps.
The treats were then delivered to FreeHelp CK, the WISH Centre, and Outreach for Hunger.
Families in need who are hoping to secure some Easter treats for their children are encouraged to contact one of three listed organizations. However, due to social distancing measures, residents cannot show up to the location to register and must call ahead for direction.
With social gatherings of more than five people being banned and social distancing measures in place, Easter in Chatham-Kent will look a little different. But Mifflin said they're hopeful these treats will bring some sense of joy to children in the area.
"They're being isolated from everyone and that's a pretty big thing to deal with," he said. "If a small gesture that we made is able to provide some respite for the kids, then I think we have accomplished our goal."
For residents who don't need Easter candy but do need food, Mifflin said the three organizations they have partnered with are taking calls. The Outreach for Hunger location in Chatham will be open on select days with modified hours during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"If you're in a position to make a donation, please consider our three partners, FreeHelp CK, the WISH Centre, or Outreach for Hunger -- or a charity of your choice," said Mifflin.
