Ridgetown seniors excited about new centre

Ridgetown is getting a new, larger seniors centre.

Bob Dye, President of the Ridgetown and Area Adult Activity Centre, said the new 75,000 square foot seniors centre will be three times larger than their current facility on Main Street, which he said was previously retail space and is not really suited for their needs.

The current centre has 400 members and the new building will allow a maximum of 500 people. Dye said the new $2.5 million centre could not have happened without the generous, anonymous donations from the community.

"The property was donated with $100,000, we have another donation of $250,000, and commitments and promises. So, we're in good shape," Dye said, adding everyone seems excited about the new building. "We had a community information session on October 30 and we had nearly 100 people out on a rainy night in October."

The new centre will go up on the site of the old Erie Street United Church.

"The purchaser of the property donated the property and the cash, which was a good start. It's a $2.5 million dollar project and there are not many of those in Ridgetown," said Dye.

The new Ridgetown seniors centre should be open by the end of 2020 at Erie Street and York Street.
