Chatham family starts new beginning with Habitat home

Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent has dedicated its sixth home to a large and very appreciative family.

Cassidi Pryor and her four nieces and nephews accepted the ceremonial key to their new home at 97 Woods St. in Chatham at a ceremony on Wednesday morning. The home took 1,300 hours to build and the Pryor family put in 700 of those hours. Cassidi's niece, Kailyn, was smiling ear to ear before a full house when she thanked all those who helped.

"We are really happy for the new journeys you guys have combined for us," said Kailyn. "We are so happy and thank you."

Cassidi's smiling niece, Brooklyn, said it is a special day for the entire family.

"This is a very special moment for us. This is a new beginning and starting," said Brooklyn. "We are very excited to be here today at this very moment with you guys. This is a place that we can call home, thank you."

Cassidi said Habitat for Humanity is so much more than meets the eye and she's very grateful for the work it does to help the community.

"I'm standing here today in a beautiful homemade from the resources, hours, hearts, spirit, and minds of everyone around me and the community that I've grown up and loved very much," said Cassidi. "I'm so very appreciative of the blessings that have helped me build me."

An emotional Habitat Executive Director, Nancy McDowell said this build is an impressive accomplishment and is a testament to the community.

"We're so thankful that your dream, we were able to come together, bring the staff, the volunteers, the community -- look at the people that are represented -- and I'm so glad that it's now your reality and your home. Congratulations!" McDowell said.

Councillor Brock McGregor told the crowd this new home is a great step towards addressing the affordable and secure housing crisis in Chatham-Kent.

Cassidi and her nieces and nephews, Gavin, Isaiah, Brooklyn, and Kailyn all received quilts as house warming gifts from the Chatham Kent Quilters’ Guild.
