Local school boards promotes more welcoming environments

The Lambton Kent District School Board and St. Clair Catholic District School Board is dedicating this week to raising awareness about bullying.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week runs from November 18 to 22. During this time, safe and inclusive learning environments will be promoted.

According to a recent School Climate Survey, a majority of students from Grades 4-12 at the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) feel their school is welcoming and safe. The findings also showed 90 per cent of parents and guardians feel their child’s school is welcoming. However, LKDSB Director John Howitt said Bullying Awareness Week is a chance to educate students and parents on the impacts that bullying can have and how to prevent it from happening.

“Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is an opportunity to reinforce the important lessons about the different forms of bullying, encourage students to connect with caring adults and highlight the resources available to support students with concerns,” said Howitt.

Throughout the week, LKDSB schools, with support from Safe Schools and Multi-Disciplinary Teams, will be participating in a variety of activities to promote bullying awareness and prevention.

“We remain committed to working together to promote positive learning and work environments so that students and staff feel safe and welcome in our schools,” Howitt said.

In the meantime, the St. Clair Catholic District School board will be putting an emphasis on kindness throughout the week. Every area Catholic school has been given a wellness kit, which includes announcements and activities for students -- all of which encompass the theme of kindness.
