GM Canada issues separate recall for braking issues

The Canadian subsidiary for General Motors has added to a U.S. recall on some of its pickup trucks and SUVs.

Over 37,000 vehicles sold in Canada have been recalled by the automaker to a software glitch that may affect the braking performance of the vehicle, according to Crain's Automotive News Canada. As in the U.S., the vehicles involved are the following:

  • 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon SUVs.
  • 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup trucks
  • 2014-2018 GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks
At least 600,000 of these vehicles were recalled last week in the U.S. GM said the specific problem involves the wheel-speed sensor. If it fails, a software glitch in the electronic brake-control module may cause the driveline-protection system to activate. If the driveline-protection system is functioning, the vehicle may cause unintended braking of the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, leading to a crash.

No injuries or crashes have been reported as a result of this issue, but Automotive News Canada reports that over 150 claims in the U.S. have been reported.

If you own one of the vehicles in question, you should receive a recall notice in the mail. Mechanics at a GM service centre will correct the glitch at no charge.
