Province releases new safety videos to prevent barn fires

Provincial officials in Ontario have released a series of new informational safety videos aimed at preventing tragic farm fires -- especially in the winter months.

A release from the province said the videos are "part of an ongoing effort with farmers an industry to develop different ways to reduce the potential loss of human and animal lives, injury and property damage from barn fires."

The videos include information on good housekeeping practices, safety practices regarding electrical equipment, and safety measures for workers performing "hotworks" such as welding, grinding, and torching.

"As a former volunteer firefighter who has witnessed the devastation caused by barn fires, I am always saddened to hear when we face these kinds of losses on our farms," said Ernie Hardeman, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in a release. "I highly encourage all farmers to learn more about the resources my ministry provides and to consult with their local fire departments or insurer on farm fire safety planning."

The release of the videos follows a series of large barn fires across Ontario over the past few months, including a $6 million loss in Norfolk County on December 12, a $1 million loss in Quinte West on December 12 that killed around 1,200 pigs, and a barn fire in Wilmot Township on December 4 where several calves died.

Fire crews were also called to a large blaze just outside of Chatham on October 22, 2018. In that case, the property owners believed heat trapped in old straw may have started the blaze.
