The shelves at the Salvation Army's food bank in Chatham-Kent are getting a solid boost thanks to the generosity of local elementary school students and their families.
The Blackburn Radio Food Drive challenged elementary schools in Chatham-Kent to collect donations over the past few weeks and they managed to come up with 9,639 items of food for the cause. The initiative started during the Positivity School tours, which were conducted in collaboration with Positivity Day in CK celebrations.
"It’s evident by the overwhelming success of the food drive that the students of Chatham-Kent were inspired by our challenge and we are very proud of all the schools that participated," said Amanda Thibodeau, marketing and promotions manager for Blackburn Radio Inc. "It’s our hope that the food drive is the start of even bigger things to come for next year and we will continue to work to encourage the youth and residents of Chatham-Kent to give back to our community."
Wallaceburg Christian School was recognized as the top school for donating the most food items per capita. The school only has an enrollment of 80 students, but it managed to collect more than seven times its population size.
For winning the challenge, students at Wallaceburg Christian School will now receive a "Positively Awesome" Lunch Party provided by Piezano’s Pizza, as well as a Trophy Presentation.
