Huntington fundraiser to mark 21 years

An annual fundraiser that includes trap shooting and a pig roast will kick off its 21st year in Chatham-Kent on Saturday.

Event spokesperson Renee Jubenville said the event raises money for the Huntington Society of Canada. Huntington disease is an incurable brain disorder with symptoms similar to diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Jubenville said she is a positive carrier of the disease and knows the toll it can take on a family.

"When brain cells die, that's when you'll notice the physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms," she said. "I have three children so all three are at 50 per cent risk of inheriting this disease."

Jubenville and Dave Ulch speak with local families who are affected by Huntington disease. But lately, Jubenville said they're hearing more from the younger age groups who are hoping to learn more about it.

"There are a lot more new people contacting us, new families, younger people that are finding out they have the disease," she said. "I think this year's [fundraiser] might be our biggest year."

The trap shooting portion of the fundraiser will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at Rondeau Rod and Gun Club in Blenheim. The event costs $25 and includes lunch. The pig roast dinner starts at 6 p.m. and costs $10 per person. Tickets are limited so Jubeville is encouraging people to call Ulch at (519) 354-3692.

The annual event usually sees over 100 people at the dinner. Throughout the years, Jubenville said at least $200,000 has been raised for the Huntington Society of Canada through this annual fundraiser.

Residents who are looking to learn more about the disease can visit the Huntington Society website.
