Bringing awareness to poverty

A flag for Poverty Awareness Week is waving over the Civic Centre in Chatham.

A flag-raising ceremony was held Friday morning ahead of Poverty Awareness Week, which starts October 15.

Phillip Mock, prosperity roundtable project coordinator said in a media release, more than 16,000 people, including more than 4,000 children, live below the poverty level locally.

The Prosperity Roundtable will be holding events throughout the week in order to spread awareness and start conversations. A community discussion is set for October 15 at 4 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre. On October 17 at 7 p.m. the Capitol Theatre will show a movie called I, Daniel Blake, which is about a man trying to navigate the social welfare system after falling ill. A community game night will be held on October 18 at the Chatham-Kent Public Library.

More details about the Prosperity Roundtable and their events can be found through their Facebook page.
