OPP catch stunt driver and two impaired drivers

A woman won't be driving for a while after police allegedly caught her going over 150 kilometres per hour on Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent.

The incident happened on October 2 at roughly 9:45 p.m. Ontario Provincial Police said they were conducting radar enforcement around Bloomfield Road when they clocked the woman's vehicle reaching speeds over 150 kilometres per hour in a posted 100 kilometre per hour stretch of highway.

The 50-year-old Caledon woman's licence was suspended and her vehicle impounded, both for seven days.

Chatham-Kent OPP want to remind motorists that stunt driving or racing is one of the most serious and reckless forms of aggressive driving. Officers added it puts everyone on the road at serious risk of injury or death.

According to police, anyone caught exceeding 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit will receive an immediate seven-day licence suspension and vehicle impoundment. If found guilty the person will have to pay upwards of $10,000, lose 6 demerit points and could serve up to six months in jail and lose their license for two years. A second conviction within 10 years will earn the person a 10-year license suspension.

In a separate incident, OPP caught two allegedly impaired drivers in Chatham.

Officers said in both cases they conducted traffic stops on St. Clair Street on October 7.

According to the police, the first was around 12:45 a.m. OPP said the officer on scene determined the driver had consumed alcohol. Officers said the driver was transported to detachment for further tests.

A 40-year-old Chatham man was charged with driving a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, driving with an open container of liquor and driving without a valid permit.

About two hours later police said they caught another impaired driver on St. Clair Street.

Officers said around 2:40 a.m. they conducted a traffic stop on St Clair Street in the City of Chatham and determined the driver was intoxicated. The driver was also transported to detachment for further tests.

The 24-year-old Wallaceburg man has been charged with driving a motor vehicle with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood and speeding.

All three drivers will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Chatham on November 14.
