A new project will use current technology to start updating soil mapping in Ontario.
The project will provide data to support agricultural and environment initiatives .
It will contribute information to support climate change mitigation and adaption efforts.
And it will be used to help further protect the quality of Ontario's lake, rivers and streams.
The 5 point 1 million dollars for the project is coming from Growing Forward 2 - a joint effort of the federal and provincial governments.
Ontario Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says it will ensure governments have the information needed to promote environmental and sustainability in the province's agriculture sector for generations to come.
This year the project will focus on farmland around Ottawa, in Peterborough County and in the Cochrane to Hearst corridor.
Future years will involve parts of the Grand River Conservation Authority and Temiskaming Shores.
Ontario officials say they're working with Ottawa to come up with a long-term funding path to continue the soil mapping initiative to cover the entire province.
