Gay Lea's SVCA Delays Concern Local Business Group

The South Bruce Community Business Association is getting involved in Gay Lea's planned Teeswater plant expansion.

Association President Adam Ireland says the company is an outstanding corporate citizen employing more than 80 people.

He's concerned about problems Gay Lea is having getting its proposed expansion approved by the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority.

"Over three years they've been in discussion with Saugeen Valley and feel that they're hitting a bit of a wall. They're not getting any answers or any workable solutions - and so the Business Association just wants to bring this to the attention of the general community."

Ireland agrees it's the Authority's role to provide some resistance when it comes to projects which could have an impact on the environment.

However, he suggests the SVCA's role should also include offering some solutions and co-operation, not just throwing up a brick wall.

Ireland also points out that while the Teeswater plant is on the banks of the river, there has never been a documented case of any flooding in Gay Lea's yard.

He says since they started looking into the situation, the South Bruce Community Business Association has also heard from other individuals who said they've had similar problems with the SVCA.

The Association wants to bring the situation out in the public to prompt an open discussion about the role of the Authority and how it could probably better serve the community and help ease the red tape burden.
