The Canadian Federation of Agriculture has come up with some recommendations for Growing Forward 3.
Now it's planning a series of sessions with other producer and industry organisations to get their feedback on those recommendations.
The current federal/provincial agricultural policy framework expires in 2018.
CFA President Ron Bonnett says Canadian producers have a huge stake in the process and the federation has a responsibility to develop solutions for the industry.
According to Bonnett, the CFA doesn't expect government to have all the answers.
The federation's recommendations are in a report called 'The Next Agriculture Policy Framework: Positioning Canadian Agriculture for Continued Success'.
It touches on a number of areas, including risk management tools to mitigate damages associated with increased weather volatility.
It also has recommendations on coordinating market development investments and a government/industry backed national food policy.
Bonnett says the CFA will use it's sessions with other producer and industry groups to decide whether its policies or recommendations need to be modified to ensure consensus across the industry.
