The National Farmers Union Ontario has joined with the OFA in criticizing a suggestion from the new Environmental Commissioner of Ontario.
The Commissioner told a newspaper reporter she'd like to see an end to diesel fuel subsidies, as she called them.
NFU-Ontario points out coloured diesel for agriculture is priced lower because it is taxed less, not because it is subsidized.
Since farm vehicles are primarily used in private farm fields for food production, the farm group argues the fuel used in them should not be taxed to pay for provincial transportation infrastructure.
Emery Huszka of th NFU-Ontario's Regional Council suggests if the government takes the Commissioner's advice it would be a money grab at the expense of farmers, not to be confused with eliminating a subsidy.
