Tecumseh to prepare a bylaw for e-bikes and e-scooters

Tecumseh is the second municipality in Essex County to question whether its bylaws are enough to govern e-bike and e-scooter use.

Council instructed administration on Tuesday night to prepare a bylaw that would restrict the use of e-bikes, e-scooters, and any motorised vehicle on sidewalks, paths, and multi-use trails.

The parks bylaw will be amended.

On Monday night, Essex Town Council opted to explore what other municipalities are doing and consult with the Ontario Provincial Police.

Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy said her notice of motion came out of an OPP North meeting, and said the OPP is looking for similar bylaws in all Essex County communities.

In Windsor on Monday night, two 12-year-old girls were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after the e-scooter they were on ran through a red light and collided with a minivan.

Monday night's incident was the second in the city in which a teen suffered serious injuries in a collision involving an e-scooter and a vehicle.
