Mental health help is available, says HDGH

Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare hopes residents across the region will prioritize their mental well-being and reminds people that support is available through a wide range of programs and services.

As it celebrated World Mental Health Day on Friday, the hospital is promoting the message that mental health challenges can affect anyone, regardless of their age, background, or circumstance.

"We want everyone in our community to know that they are not alone," said Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare President and CEO Bill Marra. "Mental health is health, and seeking support is a sign of strength. Every day, our teams utilitze their expertise to ensure children, youth, adults, and families have access to individualized, person-centred care when and where they need it most."

For children and youth, the Regional Children's Centre serves as the lead agency. Through WEConnectKids, children, youth, caregivers, and service providers can access mental health and addiction services.

Anyone concerned about a child, or if a young person is struggling, help is available at 519-257-5437 or by attending the centre's walk-in counselling clinic during regular business hours.

If a child or youth is at immediate risk of harm to themselves or others, go to the nearest Emergency Department or call 911 to be connected with the Youth Crisis Response Team.

Adults experiencing an urgent mental health or addictions crisis can reach out to HDGH's Mental Health and Addictions Urgent Crisis Centre at 1030 Ouellette Avenue. The centre is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It offers walk-in services, crisis intervention, addictions support, and access to specialized care. Its number is 519-973-4435.

"Creating a healthier community means reducing stigma and making it easier for people to reach out for help," said Tammy Kotyk, the Vice President of Mental Health and Addictions. "Whether you are seeking support for yourself, your child, a family member, or a friend, HDGH and our community members are here to help."
