Why are Windsor homeowners paying 11.5 per cent more for home insurance than provincial average?

While Windsor doesn't have the highest home insurance rates in Ontario, a new report from Rates.com suggests homeowners in the city pay 11.5 per cent more than the provincial average.

Rates.com's report says home insurance premiums across Ontario are up 6.2 per cent year-over-year.

In Windsor, the rates are up 1.5 per cent year-over-year, from $2,455 last year to $2,493. The Ontario average is $2,235.

The report states the risk of flooding is the biggest reason why Windsor homeowners are paying more.

The report cited two postal codes that are high risk for flooding, N8S and N8X. Both are considered high-risk areas for flooding from exterior sources, including from system backup. Wind, hail damage, and theft were also named as risk factors.

Premiums across the region are higher than the provincial average. Kingsville had the highest with an average rate of $2,759 this year, 23.4 per cent above the provincial average.

Amherstburg's rates were 23 per cent higher at $2,750. In Leamington, the average premium is $2,747, which is 22.9 per cent above the provincial average, and premiums in Essex are 20 per cent above at $2,682.
