LaSalle finalizes infrastructure application, promising elimination of DCs

The Town of LaSalle has joined other Windsor-Essex communities in applying for housing-related funding, but it took it a step further.

On Monday, the Town confirmed that it had submitted its application for the province's Development Charge Reduction Program (DCRP).

If the application is approved by the provincial government, development charges will be eliminated for three years. In other words, a 100 per cent reduction.

"This provincial funding would allow the Town to eliminate municipal development charges on eligible residential projects during the program period, reducing costs and helping to accelerate the construction of much-needed housing," said Mayor Crystal Meloche. "It would also enable us to advance infrastructure projects sooner than would otherwise be possible, benefiting both future growth and the residents who already call LaSalle home."

The projects tied to the application are the expansions of the Reaume Road and Sandwich West Parkway area, plus the Ellis Street and Diotte Drive area. The Town said both projects will improve transportation connectivity and provide services necessary to encourage housing development.

The deadline for the DCRP application was on Friday, with the province expected to announce grant recipients later this summer.

Windsor City Council voted last week to include a potential 70 per cent DC reduction for successful applications.

Kingsville and Lakeshore have each agreed to cut DCs in half upon a successful application.

Amherstburg Town Council decided last week to opt out.
