Seven-hour Windsor standoff leads to arrest

A 35-year-old man has been charged following a standoff that began early Monday in Windsor.

Windsor police responded to multiple calls about loud noises or gunshots from Byng Road near Vimy Avenue, not far from Windsor Regional Hospital's Met campus, throughout the overnight hours of Monday morning. Police were initially unable to determine the source of the ruckus.

At around noon, more calls were received reporting blasts that were strong enough to shake the windows of adjacent homes.

Police learned that a man detonated at least one explosive device on his front lawn and quickly set up a perimeter around the house. Several attempts were made to engage the man and get him to come out, but he refused.

Trained negotiators, along with members of the Emergency Services Unit and the Explosives Disposal Unit, were finally able to persuade the man to surrender.

The man is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon and mischief interfering with other people's enjoyment of their property.

The charges have not been proven in court. The investigation is ongoing.

Byng Road between Vimy Avenue and Lorraine Avenue was closed for several hours. It has since reopened.
