After 15 opioid overdoses were reported at local emergency departments last week, the Windsor Essex Community Opioid and Substance Strategy has issued an alert.
The overdoses were all reported between November 23 and November 29.
Twelve overdoses were related to the use of fentanyl.
Meanwhile, the strategy has released some advice for those who are using or who have a loved one who is.
They include never using substances alone, avoiding mixing substances, having naloxone ready, and if you use with a friend, don't use at the same time. Users are also advised to call 911 immediately if something doesn't feel right.
If someone overdoses in your presence, it suggests shouting at the person and shaking their shoulders, giving naloxone if the person was using opioids, calling 911, and staying with the person. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides some legal protection for those who experience or witness an overdose and call for help.
