Grant assists Downtown Mission with mental health strategies

Staff at the Downtown Mission are better equipped to handle their mental health thanks to a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

The mission was awarded a grant to hire a Mental Health Well-Being Facilitator for the last two years.

"Through those two years, our mental health and well-being facilitator she trained a lot of our staff who are, going forward, doing some of the work that she was able to implement," said Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin, Executive Director of the Downtown Mission.

She indicated that many staff and clients struggled with their mental health following the COVID-19 pandemic, and the facilitator helped the organization implement strategies to prevent future burnout.

"She helped our staff and our organization work through all the challenges that we learned about during COVID to make sure our space is safer and more welcoming and more accessible to all that need it," said Ponniah-Goulin.

The Downtown Mission celebrated the grant with MPP Lisa Gretzky on Friday morning.
