Public Health Ontario has declared the multi-jurisdictional measles outbreak over.
The outbreak was first declared on October 28, 2024 and was officially over on October 7, 2025. During that time, there were 2,375 measles cases in the province.
A new case of measles linked to the outbreak has not been reported to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit since July 27, 2025.
"It doesn't mean that the risk is gone forever," said Dr. Mehdi Aloosh, Medical Officer of Health for Windsor-Essex. "It is still possible that we would have some cases here or there or the disease comes back."
There were 149 cases reported locally, but Dr. Aloosh indicated there were likely cases that were never reported.
"That has been significant work for us, particularly in terms of contact management, to find contacts, offer post-exposure prophylaxis treatment, which is preventative treatment, vaccines and preventing the spread of the disease in the community," said Dr. Aloosh.
Dr. Aloosh advises everyone to stay up to date on their vaccines.
"We observed that those who have been fully vaccinated did not lose any time from their school, from their work, they did not need to be excused from those settings, and they continued their normal life," said Dr. Aloosh.
According to the provincial report, 96.4 per cent of cases in children and adolescents were unimmunized while 69.9 per cent of adult cases were unimmunized.
Parents and family doctors have been advised to return to the regular vaccination routine now that the risk of contracting the disease has declined.
