New policy coming to address harrassment of staff and councillors in Essex

The Town of Essex is developing a policy to address harrassment of staff and councillors.

Council is looking to create an R-Zone policy similar to other municipalities that promotes respectful and responsible behaviour in all municipal facilities including council chambers and recreational facilities.

"It will allow the CAO to do things like restrict sources of communication, types of communication and if the CAO wants to restrict somebody from a town facility because of their actions at that town facility she can go ahead and do things like that," said Town Clerk Joe Malandruccolo

The notice of motion was made after a disturbance in council chambers earlier this year.

Deputy Mayor Rob Shepley said he's unconvinced the policy will change behaviour but at least it sets a standard.

"Treat everybody with respect. I try to treat everybody with the same respect that I expect to receive in return. I hope this act will help to just remind people on their way in that they should stick to that council decorum," said Shepley.

The full policy will need council approval at a later meeting.
