SIU clears OPP in Lakeshore crash

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has terminated its investigation into a crash last month that resulted from a driver fleeing a traffic stop.

On July 22, an Essex County OPP officer conducted the stop on County Road 8 in Lakeshore, for speeding and a licence plate infraction.

The 51-year-old female driver fled the stop, later losing control of the vehicle and driving into a ditch in front of a home on County Road 8 near County Road 31. The woman fled on foot and hid in a wheat field.

The officer found the woman, and she was taken to hospital to be treated for a compression fracture in her lower back.

Deputy SIU Director Stacey O'Brien determined that the OPP officer had nothing to do with the woman's injury.

"On this record, it was readily apparent that the officer did nothing that could conceivably attract criminal liability in connection with the injuries of the woman," read a release from the SIU.
