The third time was the charm in the Town of Amherstburg's effort to designate an area for preserving its colourful history.
Amherstburg Town Council approved the designation of the Town's first Heritage Conservation District (HCD) at its meeting on Tuesday night.
Mayor Michael Prue said it was satisfying to see the vision become the reality after some false starts.
"This has been a long time coming," said Prue. "After 46 years and two previous attempts, council is proud to finally see this vision realized. The Heritage Conservation District will ensure Amherstburg’s unique character and stories are preserved, even as we plan for future growth."
The HCD consists of the area of downtown roughly bounded by Wolfe and Brock Streets on the east, Park Street on the south, the Detroit River on the west, and the Wigle and Toddy Jones Parks on the north.
The area is home to many points of historical interest and cultural significance.
The district was first created after a long period of study in the area, which involved extensive historical research. The next phase was planning, which included a draft of the HCD and public meetings. Finally, the finished product was reviewed and approved by Town Council.
