Windsor police say some drivers still aren't getting the message about the dangers of using cell phones while driving.
Members of the Traffic Enforcement Unit conducted an enforcement blitz throughout the city on Wednesday.
Officers stopped and issued 41 citations, with 18 of them being for cell phone use while driving.
"Distracted driving endangers not only your safety but the safety of everyone on the road," read an X post from Windsor police. "Please stay focused, put your phone away, and make safe driving your priority."
The Ontario Highway Traffic Safety Act includes stiff penalties for people caught driving while distracted. For fully licenced drivers, a fine of at least $615 is possible for a first offence, with subsequent offences carrying fines as high as $3,000. Licence suspensions of up to 30 days are also possible, along with anywhere from three to six demerit points.
For G1 and G2 licence holders, suspensions may range from 30 days to revocation of driving privileges.
