The City of Windsor is approved to receive over $28.1-million in funding from the new Canada Public Transit Fund to modernize Transit Windsor's infrastructure.
At the Transit Windsor bus terminal at Tecumseh Mall on Friday, Kusmiercyzk announced the funding. It will be paid out over a decade, and will start flowing next year.
Transit Windsor plans to build a new terminal across the street from the mall soon.
"As a proud former Windsor City Councillor, I know that a strong Transit Windsor is essential to connect residents to jobs, schools, healthcare, and community services," said Kusmierczyk. "With the fastest-growing economy in Canada, now is the time to invest even more in public transit."
The city needs to submit a capital plan application to Housing and Infrastructure Canada to finalize the agreement. It'll also have to agree to some zoning changes to allow more buses near transit stations, the University of Windsor, and St. Clair College.
The Canada Public Transit Fund is the biggest investment in public transit in Canadian history, said a release from the federal government. Windsor will join cities like Ottawa, which received $180-million, and London. It received $51-million.
