A girls' hockey team in Windsor-Essex is hoping that their community efforts will be enough to help out their chosen charity.
The Lakeshore Lightning's U-11 team is currently in the lead for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup, which challenges minor hockey teams to serve their communities.
With the event ending on Thursday, the U-11 team is holding a lead over a field of 53 minor hockey teams from across Canada.
Among the "good deeds" done by the team are providing winter clothing to those in need or without them, delivering treats to Essex-Windsor EMS paramedics at the Essex Post, and volunteering at the Windsor-based group 100 Women Who Care.
The automaker will award the Good Deeds Cup to the winning team, along with $100,000 to give to the registered Canadian charity of their choice. The U-11 team has selected the Cancer Research Collaboration Fund's Play for a Cure as its beneficiary.
Second and third-place teams will receive $25,000 and $10,000, respectively.
