The chill of winter has resulted in an increased demand for shelter for Windsor's vulnerable population.
Thanks to support from the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and Housing Information Services, the Downtown Mission is adding 18 beds to its shelter capacity. The beds will be set up on the building's second floor.
Mission Executive Director Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin said falling winter temperatures have pushed demand up as far as it's ever been.
"The brutal winter temperatures are life-threatening for those without a place to stay," said Ponniah-Goulin. "We are doing everything we can to ensure that no one is left out in the cold. With the support of CMHA and Housing Information Services, we’ve been able to expand our capacity and provide additional resources to those in need."
Both organizations have had a daily presence at the Mission, offering help with mental health services, housing support, and referrals to other agencies.
