City needs more firefighters

The City of Windsor should be hiring an additional 20 firefighters in the next one to three years according to the latest fire master plan.

The 10-year plan was developed by the Emergency Management Group after reviewing the Windsor Fire and Rescue Services.

The report states as the population in the city continues to grow an additional 20 firefighters will be needed in the medium to long-term of the plan.

Each new hire would cost the city around $70,000 to start.

As growth is projected throughout the city the plan recommends the fire chief assess the growth and determine where new fire stations should be located in the future.

The plan also recommends building a new fire station downtown as the current headquarters is running out of space. There is also the need for a new training and apparatus complex. Both of these projects are estimated to cost upwards of $14 million.

City councillors will be asked to accept the fire master plan at Monday night's council meeting.
