Windsor jobless rate falls as economy adds jobs

The addition of another 1,000 jobs in the local economy helped push Windsor's jobless rate down by three-tenths of a percentage point last month to 8.9 per cent.

It might have been lower, but the city's population grew by 1,400.

The Labour Participation Rate didn't change. It remained at 64.2 per cent in September.

Nationally, the economy added 47,000 net positions, lowering the unemployment rate a tenth of a per cent to 6.5 per cent, the first time it's fallen since January.

Windsor's employment rate ticked downwards 0.1 per cent to 60.7 per cent after no change for the past four months.

Employment for those aged 15 to 24 improved as the economy added 33,000 positions and for core-aged women (25 to 54) by 21,000 jobs.

Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey said employment in information, culture and recreation, wholesale and retail trade, and professional, scientific, and technical services improved in September.

Canadians worked 0.4 per cent fewer hours last month, but the average hourly wage grew by another 4.6 per cent or $1.58 to $35.59.

While employment grew, so did Canada's population, by 1.4-million.

Adjusted to U.S. concepts, the unemployment rate in Canada was 5.4 per cent, just 1.3 per cent higher than in the U.S.

Ontario added 43,000 net positions, and its jobless rate fell 0.2 per cent to 6.9 per cent.
