"Silent sentinel" of public health to be decommissioned

The Windsor Utilities Commission has begun decommissioning its water treatment plant on Wyandotte Street East.

The work started this week to make room for the future expansion of the Albert H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant next door.

The plant closed in 2012, but before that, it treated the city's drinking water for 88 years.

The Border Cities Utilities Commission built the plant in 1924. In 1994, a more advanced facility sprung up next door, and the Windsor Utilities Commission gradually reduced reliance on the old plant.

The facility's use transitioned to a living classroom, welcoming tours of the curious.

Significant artifacts from the old plant will be preserved at the current Albert H. Weeks Water Treatment Plant.
