Boer War Memorial rededicated in Jackson Park

The City of Windsor has unveiled its newly restored Boer War Memorial in Jackson Park.

Local military organizations joined Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens Wednesday for the memorial's rededication ceremony.

The Boer War, from 1899 to 1902, is sometimes called Canada's Forgotten War. It marked Canada's first dispatch of troops to an overseas war when fighting erupted between Britain and two small republics in South Africa.

Over 7,000 Canadians fought in the Boer War, including 48 from Windsor-Essex.

The Boer War Memorial was first dedicated as part of a memorial fountain in 1906. Funded by the Veteran Mother's Committee, it was outside the former Post Office.

In 1932, the memorial moved to Jackson Park. Over the years, it fell into disrepair and by 2016, the required repairs were significant.

City Council approved an extensive $675,000 restoration project four years ago.
