University of Windsor President announces retirement

The University of Windsor will need a new president at the end of the academic year.

Doctor Robert Gordon plans to retire.

The Board of Governors was recently informed so it can plan for the transition and find a replacement.

Gordon joined the university five years ago. He's the seventh president and vice-chancellor.

"Serving the University of Windsor community as President and Vice-Chancellor has been the greatest honour of my academic and administrative career," he said.

Before he was president, Gordon served as provost and vice president of academics.

Before that, he was the vice president of research at Wilfred Laurier University and the dean of the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph.

Gordon is leaving his second term as president and vice president early after he was reappointed earlier this year.

"After thoughtful reflection and many important conversations, I have decided to retire after this academic year," explained Gordon. "I do plan on remaining actively involved in the University of Windsor's administration and community during the next several months with a focus on moving forward several key priorities."

Under his leadership, the university earned its highest international rankings and was identified as the Canadian University that has risen the most in the QS World University Rankings.

Sustainability, including a Carbon Neutral Master plan, was a top priority under Gordon's leadership. He also led the development of the university's first strategic plan, Aspire, in more than 15 years.

During his tenure, the university has expanded its downtown campus, opened the Toldo Lancer Centre, transformed the Ron W. Ianni Faculty of Law building, expanded research and community partnerships, and helped advance Indigenous equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

The University of Windsor is also looking for a new Chancellor. Doctor Mary Jo Haddad announced she'll step down as of May 31, 2025.
