Essex honours library heritage

A heritage plaque honouring the Essex Carnegie Library building was unveilled this week in the Town of Essex.

The building was completed in 1914 after a donation from businessman Andrew Carnegie. The Essex Library was one of 125 libraries built across Canada supported by Carnegie.

“The unveiling of this heritage plaque is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our Town’s rich history and the contributions of Andrew Carnegie to public education.” said Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy.

The building was designed by Windsor architect J.C. Pennington in the Beaux Arts style.

It housed a library until 2005 and now houses the Essex and Community Historical Research Center.
