Speeding top reason for charges over Labour Day Weekend

Speeding drivers continue to keep the Ontario Provincial Police busy in Essex County.

The OPP released the results of a Labour Day Weekend traffic enforcement blitz on Friday morning.

Of the 277 charges laid, 143 were for speeding on OPP-patrolled roads in the region. One driver was cited for stunt driving, while officers charged another six with driving impaired. A total of 141 were issued warnings.

Another 20 people face charges for not wearing a seatbelt, and the OPP laid another 67 charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

"Essex OPP officers continue to observe risky driving behaviours by some commuters on our highways and roadways, and the Labour Day Weekend was no exception," said Acting Inspector Jamie Smith. "Excessive speed, distracted driving, impaired driving, and a lack of seatbelt use continued to be areas of concern."

Speed, not wearing a seatbelt, and distracted and impaired driving continue to be the leading cause of death and injury on Ontario roads.
