Canadian border agents are using a recent tobacco bust in Windsor to educate commuters on the importance of declaring goods at international crossings.
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) agents referred a commercial truck driver to secondary inspection at the Ambassador Bridge on August 21.
A search of the vehicle uncovered 188 kilograms of undeclared tobacco products.
The tobacco was seized, but the CBSA has not released any further details about the case.
Commuters are urged to know the exemption guidelines for tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and similar products.
"If you wish to import cigarettes, manufactured tobacco, and tobacco sticks duty-free as part of your personal exemption, the packages must be stamped 'duty paid Canada droit acquitté'. You will find tobacco products sold at duty-free stores marked this way," read the CBSA official website.
