NextStar celebrates first anniversary with progress update

A year after ground broke on the NextStar Energy battery plant in Windsor, construction on the module plant is nearly complete, while the exterior of the plant's cell building is 90 per cent finished.

Work on the interior of the cell building is already underway, and crews are installing the equipment that will build the batteries that will power electric vehicles that come off the assembly line at the Windsor Assembly Plant.

Module operations will start this fall, followed by cell operations next year. NextStar Energy produced its first battery module sample in February.

When construction is done, the 4.23-million-square-foot site will be Canada's first large-scale, domestic, electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility.

Stellantis said it filled 325 of the 2,500 positions needed to staff the plant. Those who wish to apply can do so online.

"Hiring is currently ongoing and will have an immediate impact on the local economy, as well as providing substantial spin-off jobs throughout the local community," said the company in a release on Friday.
