LaSalle police are reminding residents that calling the emergency number is not the typical way to deal with wild animals.
Citing an increase in the number of 911 calls concerning coyotes on the property, police have again stated that the number should only used for emergencies.
"Coyotes are part of the natural ecosystem in almost every community across Ontario, including major cities," read a Facebook post. "Caution should always be taken with coyotes, and residents are urged to learn about managing conflicts with all wildlife in their area."
911 should only used if a life-or-death emergency is happening involving a wild animal, police added.
According to the Town of LaSalle's official website, there are tips on what to do if you encounter a coyote.
Keep a safe distance. Chances are the animal is more nervous about you than vice versa and will likely stay away if you leave it alone.
Don't turn your back on a coyote or run away from it. Instead, slowly back away.
Keep trash cans covered and keep pets indoors if a coyote is on your property.
Coyote sightings may be reported to the LaSalle police at the non-emergency number, (519) 969-5210. 911 should only be used if a coyote poses an immediate threat to property, animals, or humans.
