It's the world's longest trail network, and the City of Windsor is doing its part to care for it.
June 1 is Trail Care Day, and the city is celebrating the Trans Canada Trail with an event in Dieppe Park with educational booths and a list of activities.
Trail Care Day is celebrated across Canada and supported by Trans Canada Trail, which stewards and maintains the 28,000 km long trek.
"Trail Care Day embodies the spirit of grassroots stewardship," said the Interim Chief Executive Officer at Trans Canada Trail, Meghan Reddick. "Communities can shape their local tail experience while contributing to the collective preservation of Canada's iconic trail network. There's something extremely special about a national effort to care for the trail that connects us all."
When the Gordie Howe International Bridge opens at the end of 2025, it will become the first international border crossing on the trail.
"Windsor boasts more than 174 km/ of woodland and prairie hiking trails at Ojibway," said Mayor Drew Dilkens. "This initiative is a great way to celebrate our city's commitment to parks and trails and their positive impact on our quality of life and our economy as we prepare to become the connecting point of a trail system that spans such a great distance and connects two nations."
