The union representing those who patrol Canada's borders has pushed to jumpstart bargaining.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), which represents Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) employees, has been conducting strike votes since last month after contract talks broke down. The final vote is set to be in on Wednesday.
PSAC members held a rally Monday evening at the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel's exit in downtown Windsor.
An impasse in bargaining was declared in September 2023, with wages, job security, and better access to telework the key issues. The union is also looking for protection against contracting out work.
The two sides participated in hearings before the Public Interest Commission (PIC) twice last month, with the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations and Employment Board.
"In the coming weeks, the Public Interest Commission (PIC) board will provide a non-binding recommendation to reach an agreement," read a release from the PSAC.
The PSAC will be in a legal strike position seven days after receiving the report, pending the results of strike votes across Canada.
The union represents about 9,000 CBSA employees nationwide.
