Starting August 28, a new company will pick up your recycle boxes at the curb.
Circular Materials will take over the residential recycling program from the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority.
There will be few changes for residents but it could interrupt collection from businesses and not-for-profits.
Cat Griffin with the Essex Windsor Solid Waste Authority said Circular Materials is not obligated to collect from commercial properties, campgrounds, daycares or community facilities.
"If they're currently receiving collection from us we want to be able to continue that collection, that is the goal," said Griffin.
Any business or not-for-profit that currently has the EWSWA collect its recycling must register with the authority by May 24 to continue to receive recycling collection after August 27.
"EWSWA is trying to find out how many of these non-eligible sources are out there and if then we will collect them or we will hire somebody to collect for them," said Griffin. "So we need them to register to figure out what that looks like."
These changes were made because of provincially mandated recycling changes. The changes place more responsibility on producers to fund and manage the end-of-life management of materials.
This transition is happening throughout Ontario and will be complete by the end of 2025. In 2026, Ontarians can expect to see a standardized list of accepted recyclable materials throughout the province.
When Circular Materials takes over the collection, residents will no longer be able to recycle hard or soft-cover books, paint cans, spray paint cans or motor oil at the curb. paint cans, spray paint cans and motor oil can still be dropped off at any of the EWSWA depots free of charge.
