Earth Day celebrations in Malden Park

If you want to learn more about the environment and have fun doing it, this year's Earth Day celebration is Sunday in Malden Park.

This year's theme is Sustainable Mobility, and organizers ask residents to leave their cars at home if they can. Instead, take the bus, walk, or bike to the west-end park. If you must drive, organizers ask that you consider other ways to reduce gas emissions.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. It's free and features environmental exhibits, arts and crafts, games, prizes, and entertainment.

Sensational Snakes will bring their critters, and the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority invites residents to stop by their tent and submit a slogan for its new Green Bin Program launching next year.

Participants should bring their own water bottles and yoga mats.

More than 30 organizations are taking part in this year's event.

This year marks Earth Day's 54th anniversary. The first was in 1970. It's observed today in 192 countries.

The first Windsor-Essex celebration was in 1989.

If you can't celebrate Earth Day this weekend, the Essex Region Conservation Authority is hosting a tree planting next weekend.

"ERCA has hosted an annual Earth Day Tree Planting in the City of Windsor since 1999," said Director of Communications Danielle Breault Stuebing. "Over the past 25 years, nearly 37,000 trees have been planted in the city as a result of this event."

The public can come out on April 28 to plant trees along the Ganatchio Trail near Wyandotte Street East and Florence.

The event starts with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m., and attendees should bring a shovel to plant more than 2,100 trees.

Parking is available at the Riverside Kiwanis Park/Pump Track, McHugh Park parking lot, and other lots along Riverside Drive.

Groups of ten or more should sign up online as a Green Team to receive a certificate of participation no later than Sunday, April 21.
